Excercise in Fundamentals of European Law for Beginners, 1st., PUE

Prof. Dr. Tim Corthaut teaches Legislative theory and techniques at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and EU law at the University of Vienna. Since January 2011 he is an auditor at the Belgian Council of State, mainly in its Legislative Section. In this role he examines draft legislation on its conformity with higher norms of national, international and EU law, specializing in energy, media and health law and all issues of EU constitutional law and EU trade law (including Brexit).

On September 19, 2023, he will take the oath of office as councillor of state (Staatsrat) and thus become a judge in the supreme administrative court of Belgium.
He obtained his master’s degree in law at KU Leuven in 2001, after an Erasmus year at Trinity College Dublin. In 2004 he obtained an LL.M at Harvard Law School. In 2009 he was awarded a PhD in law at KU Leuven, on the basis of a thesis on “EU ordre public” supervised by Prof. Dr. Koen Lenaerts, president of the ECJ.

He has had various teaching positions at KU Leuven, UHasselt and VUB and is the author of several publications at the crossroads of EU law and national public law. He is the editor of the latest edition of the Lenaerts/Van Nuffel, EU Constitutional Law textbook (OUP, 2021/2022).
