Jedes Jahr treten mehr als 1500 Studierende von rund 300 Universitäten aus über 60 verschiedenen Ländern gegeneinander an. Teams von Studierenden agieren dabei als RechtsvertreterInnen von Parteien eines internationalen Schiedsverfahrens, das einen hypothetischen Streitfall, der dem UN-Kaufrecht unterliegt, zum Gegenstand hat. Jedes Team hat zunächst einen Schriftsatz auf Kläger- und Beklagtenseite zu verfassen, bevor in der Karwoche die mündlichen Verhandlungen in Wien stattfinden. Als Schiedsrichter fungieren dabei renommierte Praktiker und Professoren aus der ganzen Welt, wodurch sich der Vis Moot zu einer der größten jährlichen Veranstaltungen im Bereich des internationalen Schiedsrechts entwickelt hat. Der gesamte Moot Court findet auf Englisch statt.
The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (“Vis Moot”) is one of the most prestigious international moot court competitions for law students in the world. Each year, more than 1500 students from over 300 universities participate. Students act as counsels in an international commercial arbitration involving a dispute arising out of a contract of sale between two countries that are party to the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). The Vis Moot consists of two parts: The preparation of two written memoranda in support of the claimant's and subsequently the respondent's position, and the oral hearings in Vienna, taking place the week before Easter. During the oral rounds, practitioners and professors from around the globe act as arbitrators, making the Vis Moot one of the leading annual events in the field of international arbitration.
